Why Sudan's Civil War Has Ripple Effects Around the World

The conflict in Sudan is part of a larger pattern of civil wars, coups and general instability inside the African continent. On April 15th 2023 the Rapid Support Forces launched a campaign against the Sudanese Armed Forces. The ripple effect of this will be felt by all of us. This war will effect not only the people of Sudan but also the wider world. This is in part because Sudan has two key geographic features that put them in a strategically important role. The first is they’re located right on the Red Sea which is where about 10% of global trade passes through thanks to the Suez Canal. The second is Sudan is home to where the white and blue Nile rivers merge into the main Nile river. Sudan has 60% of the Nile Basin in their territory. The big takeaway here is they are upstream from Egypt who depend on the security and safe management of this water resource.

On Top of that, Africa in general is becoming increasingly important on the world stage because It’s estimated that by 2050, 1 in every 4 people in the world will live in Africa. This is because more than half of Africa’s 54 different nations are estimated to double by 2050 thanks in part to fast improving mortality rates. I think this combined with the fact that 60% of the world's arable land is located here means Africa is poised to become an important geopolitical player in the future. It appears like this pattern of conflict that we’re witnessing might be growing pains. The people of these nations are fighting to determine the direction of their future, fighting to have a say in who they partner with and which faction controls their valuable natural resources.
